"Surfer's Inn":
An El Salvador Original
1961 - Today
Now renovated and reopened, SUNZAL POINT SURF LODGE & RETREAT was the original surf lodge of El Salvador. In 1961, the Angulo family purchased Sunzal Point and shortly thereafter opened doors for business as Surfer’s Inn. Their small “rancho” was the original, first, and only lodging available for surfer’s and vacationers in the area during the 1960’s and 70’s. They provided accommodations for surfers and tourists from the United States, many of whom slept in hammocks when all the rooms were sold out. Nearby is the famed Punta Roca, check out this cool video from local videographer "Choco," Alejandro Moises, called 4 Decadas de Surf, El Salvador.
As the decades went by, the property was divided into two, and eventually abandoned altogether during the civil war. Years later, a really cool old man named Antonio Rivas (who had helped build Surfer's Inn as a young man!) purchased the upper half of the property, reopened the business, and kept the name "Surfer's Inn" alive.
Our small group of 3 crazy friends spent the first 2 months of 2007 staying at Surfer's Inn with Don Antonio and his family. We were on a road trip to Costa Rica when we first arrived, but decided to stay in El Salvador. We wanted to piece together the story of this old building in ruins (on the lower half of the property) that looked like it once was a cool place to hang out! Another month later, we purchased the land and the original buildings. There was not any power, plumbing, or running water, and the roof had caved in various places. After a lot of hard work and tons of fun, we opened the doors to surfer's and backpackers once again.
Renamed SUNZAL POINT SURF LODGE & RETREAT, our hostel is open to surfers, travelers, volunteers, and anyone who wants to stay in a comfortable, practical, fun, and adventure-filled paradise.
